When going to a job interview remember to use these job interview skills and you will do just fine.
Ever hear the term “actions speak louder than words”? Well, at any job interview your body language needs to show that you are confident and capable not only to answer job interview questions, but that you are confident, capable and have job interview skills to show you can do the job itself. This is probably one of the most important job interview skills that you can exhibit as without supportive body language your words will seem fake and insincere.
Your confident body language should not be focussed upon just the interviewer, it should start from the second you step out of your vehicle and into the building. You must impress everyone you come in contact with, as co-workers talk to each other and the chances are that if you walked through reception looking scared or nervous someone will take that as a lack of job interview skills and relate that sooner or later to the interviewer.
Social skills are the most important job interview skills
When you meet your interviewer for the first time be sure to greet him or her with a warm smile, direct eye contact and a firm handshake. These job interview skills alone will get you off to a good start. When giving job interview answers or developing a conversation, it is important to always maintain eye contact, never let your gaze wander around the room, or you will look disinterested and/or bored. Always remember to nod and smile when your interviewer is explaining something about the job or company so that they know you understand. When your interview is over, you should give them another hand shake and tell them it was great meeting them (but use your job interview skills to be careful not to overdo the ‘bonhomie’).
Its never a bad thing to be confident, but to be over confident or cocky can be a bad thing… especially when interviewing for a job! You will certainly need your best job interview skills when asked what you excel at: be sure to sound objective and say that you think you are good at “blah blah”. Never say you are the best and always try to keep it low key. No one likes listening to someone brag about how good they are. Also, one of the best job interview skills, when asked what you are not so good at or what bad points you believe you have, is to try to make your bad points sound good in some circumstances. For example, you could say that you are a perfectionist and that you can some times spend too much time on a project just to get it right.
Prepare properly before the meeting
One of the most useful job interview skills is to research as much as you can about the company and the position that you are being interviewed for, prior to the meeting. It will impress your potential employer that you were willing to go the extra mile to get the job and learn about the position and company. This also helps you because if they ask you what you know about the company you can actually talk about what you know and not sit there looking as though all you are interested in, is a paycheck.
Always have your own questions ready and rehearse your job interview skills before going in for an interview. Asking questions about the company and position you are interested in is a good thing, but wait until invited to do so unless an opportunity comes up naturally during your conversation. It makes it look as though you are more interested in the position then getting paid. Remember however,that most companies look the other way when a person being interviewed does ask about the wages, benefits, and vacations.
Ensure you use your job interview skills at the end of the interview
It is extremely good job interview advice to call or email your interviewer to follow up on the interview. This will make you seem more eager to do the job and demonstates that your job interview skills go beyond the interview itseld and employers respond to that. Just do not call or email repeatedly, preferably no more then once a week.
Good job interview skills are not hard to obtain. It is just the difficulty of remembering those job interview skills when you are nervous or scared that can be the problem. Remember, the most important skill of all is to keep breathing steadily and don’t panic. Spend preparation time on these job interview skills will give you the edge over most other candidates.
